Hawai’i Island, also known as the Big Island, is geologically unique as it hosts some of the most active volcanoes in the world. Formed entirely by volcanic activity, the island is composed of five main shield volcanoes: Kohala, Mauna Kea, Hualālai, Mauna Loa, and Kīlauea. Mauna Loa, the largest volcano on Earth, and Kīlauea, one of the most active, continuously shape the island through lava flows, expanding its landmass. The island’s geology reflects a dynamic process of hotspot volcanism, where magma rises through a stationary hotspot beneath the Pacific Plate. Over time, erosion and deposition have added diverse landscapes, including black sand beaches, lava tubes, and lush rainforests.
